One of the proudest moments of my life was the moment I first looked into my daughter Jessica’s eyes and knew that she was mine to love and protect.

No one can ever prepare you for what happens when you first look into the eyes of your new baby.  When you hold your baby in your arms and know that it’s your job now.  No one can prepare you for the love and the fear.

I was a pacifist, had never shot a gun, and I hadn’t paid much attention to what was going on in the world.

After Jessica was born I started to look around – to see the changes that were taking place in the world.  I tried to look into her future and what might happen.

At that point I knew that I didn’t want to trust anyone to take care of Jessica (or Jacob or Sophia). I needed to step up and take control. Not for me, or for my lovely wife Emma, but for our beautiful children.

Since then we’ve all taken survival very seriously. We’ve trained and prepared. We’ve learned to be flexible and to be strong.

I hope that the day never comes when we need to use these skills. And, we’re prepared.
